Chapter Twenty

Quinn

I sit waiting in Suren’s room for almost an hour before she finally turns up. She’s clutching a jar in her hand like it’s gold, but her face still holds all the weight of her exhaustion. “Where’d you go?” I ask as softly as I can, setting my Poisonous Plants book aside to give her my full attention.

“I barely made it outside before Ledger found me, so I ducked into work for some help. Yelena gave me this, said it’ll keep the leeches out of my brain,” she says, setting the jar down and kicking off her black sneakers. “If it works, I swear I’ll kiss her on the mouth.”

“I think Ollie would enjoy that more than Yelena, but who knows, she seems like she wouldn’t let gender stand in her way.” I stand up to go see this jar up close and spin it in my hands. “Do you drink it?”

“Yeah, it’s a tea. Honestly, I’m a little surprised Ledger didn’t tackle me and smash it, but maybe he’s finally losing interest,” she mutters. “Maybe breaking my face once was enough.”

She explains what happened after she left the mess hall, and I get the urge to punch a vampire. It’s not the first time I’ve gotten that urge, and something tells me it won’t be the last either. “Fuck that guy. I swear he gets off on messing with people. Probably jacking off in his room right now thinking of the blood on your face.” I shudder, then point at her bedside table. “Eat. I brought you something since I just know you haven’t and yes, there’s rolls.”

“God, I love you.” She snatches the food and shoves an entire roll in her mouth, moaning around it like she hasn’t eaten in days. When she finally swallows enough to speak, she says, “He healed me. He didn’t do anything with my blood this time. It didn’t make any sense.”

“He what?” I ask in disbelief. “He didn’t heal you with his tongue?”

She shakes her head.

“He’s so weird. Must be the goblin in him. Have you had a run in with Jakob yet?” I ask, thinking of the tall, pureblood goblin I met today at the mess hall when I was putting together her food. “He just walked up to me, told me I smelled like a dog and then walked away. Guessing he’s not a fan of Otto.”

“I wouldn’t doubt it, but no. I haven’t met him,” she says. “Speaking of Otto though...”

Her tone alone makes my stomach flutter. I knew I wouldn’t avoid this conversation for long, but I also don’t know what to say. “I think I’m falling for him.”

It’s far too late for that, but a little denial never hurt anyone.

“He’s crazy about you, so at least you’re not alone,” she offers. “Are you okay?”

“No,” I say honestly. “I can’t fall in love right now, Sur. I don’t even know who the fuck I am anymore.” Panic rises in my chest as I let it all out with the one person I know won’t judge me.
